The Low FODMAP diet has been revolutionary in the dietary treatment of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Working as a dietitian in this field I had little to offer my clients if they didn’t respond to first line dietary advice i.e. regular meals, manipulation of fibre, exclusion of caffeine etc or secondary dietary advice of single exclusion of wheat, gluten or dairy etc. We had very little to offer them as further dietary treatment.
Dr Susan Shepherd at the Monash University Melbourne, Australia was the first to devise the Low FODMAP diet. The diet does not ban all FODMAPs but teaches individuals how to make better food choices that avoid foods containing high amounts of FODMAPs.
